Early season jitters or the stuff of champions? Either way, Manchester City were grateful to escape a bruising examination at Anfield with a point. Having twice been behind to a determined, largely dominant Liverpool side, the champions had Martin Skrtel to thank for gifting Carlos Tevez an equaliser with just over ten minutes remaining. The Slovakian defender, who had given the hosts a 1-0 half-time lead with a scud missile of a header, played a blind back pass into the Argentinean’s path. It’s a measure of City’s attacking potency that they nearly won the game – substitute Edin Dzeko firing a half-chance over from six yards. City fans would be churlish to have felt disappointed – avoiding a damaging early defeat on a long August afternoon was the maximum they really deserved.
